Waqar Khawaja: President


Waqar Khawaja is the founder of Khawaja Partners, a national legal search agency committed to making career-defining connections that help attorneys develop professionally and, in the process, build a stronger legal community. A trusted and successful legal recruiter, he has helped partners, associates, and in-house counsel take the next steps in their legal careers.

An Atlanta native born to first-generation immigrant parents, Waqar is the first in his nuclear family to obtain a college education, as well as the first (and only) attorney in his extended family. As such, Waqar is passionate about networking and cultivating relationships to give South Asian attorneys and law students a leg up.

Waqar is deeply involved in the legal community, both in Georgia and nationally. As a long-standing member of the Board of Directors for SABA-GA, he enjoys using his ability to network and connect attorneys to grow SABA-GA’s membership and secure speakers and sponsors for various events.

Waqar is involved with many bar organizations, legal associations, and affinity groups from across the country that focus on building community. Waqar holds his J.D. from Mercer University and is licensed to practice in Georgia. He received his B.A. in Political Science and English from Georgia State University.

KARINA DEOCHAND: PRESIDENT-ELECT


Karina Deochand is the managing partner of Karma Injury Law by Deochand & Jayswal Law Group, LLC.  She is an experienced personal injury and complex civil litigation attorney with over 10 years of experience in the legal industry.  

Karina grew up in Gwinnett County, Georgia and attended Georgia State University, where she graduated with a B.S. in Economics. Karina worked her way through college as a case manager and paralegal at a law firm. Karina then earned her law degree from the Georgia State University College of Law, graduating with high pro bono distinction.  After graduation, Karina honed her litigation skills working as a specially-appointed district attorney prosecuting white collar and RICO cases.  After gaining several years of valuable legal experience, Karina co-founded Karma Injury Law by Deochand & Jayswal Law Group, LLC to serve her community and help those who have been wronged by the acts of others.    

Karina is also deeply involved in the community.  She serves on the Board of Directors of Raksha, a local non-profit focused on serving South Asian survivors of violence.  She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the South Asian Bar Association of Georgia.  Karina is also an active member of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, Atlanta Bar Association, South Asian Bar Association of Georgia, and the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA).  Additionally, she has contributed to the legal community by co-authoring the Georgia Municipal Benchbook, a trusted guide for Georgia’s Municipal Court judges and their staff.

PARTH MATALIA: treasurer


As an Associate at Jones Day, Parth's practice is focused on intellectual property litigation, with a primary focus on International Trade Commission (ITC) investigations in addition to trade secret and patent litigation in federal district courts.

Parth is from Florida and came to Atlanta to obtain his B.S. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and JD from Georgia State University College of Law.

ZAIN HAQ: SECRETARY


Zain Haq is an Associate at Kilpatrick Townsend. He helps clients navigate a range of cybersecurity, privacy, regulatory compliance, and technology/ commercial transaction matters. Zain is a Certified Information Privacy Profession (CIPP/US), a designation issued by the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Zain was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He obtained his B.A. degree from the University of Western Ontario, and his JD from Georgia State University College of Law.

GAUTAM REDDY: DIRECTOR


Gautam Reddy is a Partner at Kilpatrick Townsend.  He focuses his practice on construction and infrastructure projects and government contracting. He has represented a wide variety of clients in the construction industry, including owners, EPC contractors, general contractors, subcontractors, and design professionals, both in the U.S. and internationally. His practice includes both front-end contract drafting and negotiation and litigating cases in a variety of forums, including state and federal courts, domestic arbitration, international ICC arbitration, and the Civilian Board of Contract Appeals.  Gautam also maintains an active pro bono practice with a focus on immigration and housing discrimination.     

Gautam is a Michigan native and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2010 with a B.S. in Industrial & Operations Engineering.  He then moved to Atlanta and earned his J.D. from the Emory University School of Law in 2013.

KHUSHBU PATEL: DIRECTOR


Khushbu is an in-house attorney that works mainly on commercial SaaS agreements at a marketing-tech company. Khushbu was a member of SALSA while in law school at UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco (later transferred to University of Georgia School of Law), and has been a member of SABA-GA since 2021.

Being fully remote in her job, Khushbu loves attending SABA-GA events to get to know fellow South Asian attorneys in person. Khushbu thoroughly enjoyed attending the SABA-NA conference this year, and in addition to catching up with some old friends, connected with amazingly accomplished attorneys from across the U.S.

As a member of the Board of Directors, Khushbu plans to be more involved in helping to organize future SABA events/programs to cater to a wider variety of practice areas, including more collaboration with the Georgia chapter of the ACC, of which Khushbu is a member.

RAHUL GARABADU: DIRECTOR


Rahul Garabadu is the Senior Voting Rights Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Georgia. A native Georgian, Rahul is passionate about protecting the right to vote and ensuring that elections across the state are free and fair.

Rahul is currently litigating cases challenging Georgia's new election law, SB 202, and the state's redistricting maps passed in 2021. Rahul's involvement in democracy and voting rights spans the globe. In 2011, Rahul traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo on behalf of the Atlanta-based Carter Center to help set up a long-term election observation mission in advance of presidential elections in the country.

In 2017, Rahul traveled to Myanmar to provide research support to local lawyers and activists pursuing constitutional reforms in the country. While in law school, Rahul worked as a student-attorney for Protect Democracy, a non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting elections and preserving the rule of law in the United States. During the Obama Administration, he interned at the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Rahul also frequently provides commentary on voting rights and election law issues in the media; he has been quoted in publications including NBC News, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Mother Jones, and Axios.

Rahul received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and his B.A. in Economics and Government from Georgetown University. He served as a law clerk to Judge Jill N. Parrish in the 2019-2020 term.

NITHYA AMARANENI: DIRECTOR


Nithya Amaraneni is Counsel at Cousins Properties, a publicly traded commercial real estate developer who owns and manages almost 20 million square feet of office space across its portfolio.

Prior to joining Cousins at the end of February 2021, Nithya was a Real Estate associate at Troutman Pepper (formerly Troutman Sanders) where she practiced for over four years representing developers and investors in acquisition, financing, development and leasing of office, industrial and mixed-use projects throughout the United States.

Nithya is an Atlanta local and a graduate of both Emory University (2011) and Emory Law School (2017). She has roots in Louisiana, including two years teaching in Baton Rouge (through Teach for America) and a federal clerkship at the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. In her spare time Nithya enjoys baking bread and loves to spoil her almost 2-year old goldendoodle, Draper.


SIMRAN MODI: DIRECTOR


Simran Modi is an associate at King & Spalding in the Trial & Global Disputes practice group. Simran’s practice focuses on representing businesses in high-stakes commercial litigation, complex business disputes, and product liability litigation. She is a team member on several matters, including representation for Fortune 500 companies such as General Motors, Coca-Cola, R.J. Reynolds, and Boehringer Ingelheim. 

Simran is passionate about diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, and she mentors aspiring lawyers. Simran also represents clients in multiple pro bono matters through the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and Atlanta Legal Aid, where she works with women who are victims of domestic violence or are facing dispossessory actions.

Simran has been involved with SABA-GA for over 4 years and has taken an active role in the chapter’s activities. This past year, Simran served on the SABA-GA Gala Planning Committee, where she organized the gala to benefit Noor Family Services along with an incredible team. She also helped SABA-GA with sponsoring the Johns Creek Diwali Festival. Simran enjoyed attending the SABA North America Conference in Boston this past year, where she connected with South Asian attorneys across the country and helped plan the SABA-GA chapter dinner. Simran is also involved with SABA-GA’s mentorship committee, and she spoke on the Summer Success Panel to provide insight into succeeding in summer associate programs. One of Simran’s goals is to increase engagement in SABA-GA across all levels and create new ways for members to be involved.

Simran holds her J.D. with honors from the Emory University School of Law and her B.S. in Psychology, summa cum laude, from UGA.

PRANAV LOKIN: DIRECTOR


Pranav Lokin is a current law clerk for Judge Mark H. Cohen of the Northern District of Georgia.  Prior to becoming a law clerk, he worked at Akin Gump as a litigation and regulatory associate.  Upon his return to Atlanta, he quickly became involved in various civic organizations within the city and is currently a member of Atlanta Legal Aid's Service Council, a Next 11 member of Soccer in the Streets, and active within the Oakland City Community Organization (a historic neighborhood in Southwest Atlanta where Pranav is a new homeowner). His goal as a board member of SABA-GA is to increase opportunities for civic engagement, present different types of networking opportunities for members, and leverage the influence of South Asian attorneys into spaces that can benefit the city and communities at large. His favorite part of SABA is seeing attorneys that look like him succeed and being able to learn from their experiences in crafting his own career path. 

Pranav is a 2020 graduate of Emory Law, where he was a member of the South Asian Law Students Association (he still serves as an Alumni Mentor) and VP of Alumni Affairs for the Student Bar Association.  Born in Hyderabad, India, Pranav moved to Florida at a young age and his family still resides there. He graduated from the University of Tampa with a dual degree in Journalism and Political Science. Pranav also has graduate degrees from the University of Oxford (St. Antony's College) and the London School of Economics.  He wrote his theses on State Formation in India and is deeply interested in the struggle for equality across marginalized groups.  Prior to his legal career, Pranav worked in campaigns as an Organizer for the 2016 Hillary Clinton Campaign in Florida, the Amendment 4 Ballot Initiative, and as Racial Justice Chair for Women's March Tampa.  Pranav also had a sizeable pro bono practice while at Akin Gump focusing on freeing clients from disparately long sentences and combatting mass incarceration as a policy choice.

Pranav is an avid traveler, but the only thing he enjoys more than collecting passport stamps is hiking with his beloved rescue pitbull mix Aubrey.
